this exercise is safe when using a teeter rock. position yourself on the board in a downhill skier's racing tuck. in other words, squat down until your knee joint creates a 45 degree angle. you'll have one side of the board against the floor and the other side off the ground spanning the teeter rock. stay in your static squat, keep the rock centered and shift your weight slightly to the elevated side of the board, then begin pushing into the board with downward pressure while maintaining a tuck position. repeat this motion with the opposite leg. this creates the sea-saw motion while maintaining a static squat or tuck position. increase the velocity of the sea-saw motion and you'll start to feel the burn in your thighs. balance board negative push-ups - in strength training the term negative means applying more resistance to the gravity friendly portion of the lift. in our negative balance board push-up exercise, you'll add more weight to the lowering portion of the push-up by shifting most of the resistance to one arm. the way to do this is to assume a push-up position on the board, hands flat on the board, slightly outside of shoulder width, with the rock centered underneath. perform a push-up, and then roll the rock to one arm underneath the board by pushing the board towards the opposite arm. then transfer all your weight to the arm positioned over the rock (negative). lower yourself to the board. while you are still lowered over the board, slide the board so the rock is repositioned in the center of the board. push up with your weight evenly distributed over both arms, and then repeat the reloading sequence by moving to the opposite arm. you can enhance this exercise by performing a full cycle one arm push-up (up and down using one arm). now that you've got the skinny on balance training for adults over 40, why not add balance board strength, balance and fitness training to you new lifestyle with a vew-do balance board? ... read more >> standing desk solutions for standing desk balance board users if, like me, you are not keen to succumb to the dangers of sitting down all day (nhs article on sitting) but have a full-time desk job then a standing desk is a great way to become just that little bit more active during the day. i do feel better in myself now i stand for around half of the day and sit for the other half. but adapting my workspace wasn’t all that easy and it took quite a bit of research which i’d like to share with you… easy peasy instant solutions ikea lifehack - i feel grand. ... read more >> what exactly is balance? to answer the question directly: balance is the ability to maintain the body’s centre of mass above its support. 1 we use sensory inputs - our sight, touch and information provided by our vestibular apparatus which are found in the ears. the organs in our ears are amazing. there are five of them and working together they provide information about motion, spatial orientation and equilibrium. what we see, touch and feel in relation to our surroundings, speed, movement and gravity are what gives us the ability to balance and it’s easy to take it all for granted. we’ve all, at some point, felt ‘off balance’. perhaps we’ve stumbled up a step or simply had to sit down during a dizzy spell. our balance is off and there are all manner of things that might be responsible from simply getting older to more serious issues such as disease or injury. of course there’s always having a little too much to drink - one does tend to totter about after one too many - all of this can impair our balance but there is one other factor we haven’t yet considered. fatigue. whenever we walk, run, dance the ballet, surf, snowboard - whatever - we use our muscles, and we respond to the feedback we receive through those muscles, but if we’re tired we’re slower, worse, less balanced. the less experience we have of balancing, the more quickly we become fatigued, the less balance we have. if you are able bodied and walk then you are not likely to struggle balancing while you walk. if you dance the rumba regularly then your muscle strength will develop to be able to dance the rumba effectively and you therefore become stronger for longer. those activities we can’t necessarily do all the time, but would like to, are the activities that benefit from rehearsing your balance. it may not be immediately obvious to think it but any ballet teacher will tell you that practicing balance alone is extremely important and really, practice is the only way to achieve balance skill, strength and endurance. you know that scene in swan lake - there are about 45 swans on stage, they’re all lining up while more swans come out of the wings and line up and they are balancing, perfectly still, on their tip toes - actually on the ends of their toes - (for now, however, just get used to balancing on your toes.) once you are able to balance on your toes/heels, you can add some motion. begin by going out on your toes and then back on your heels. this is very close to the motion you'll make while carving on a snowboard. tip: you are doing the move correctly if you are not riding the board/rock flat. the board should be on a 15°- 45° angle towards the edges (depending on how aggressive you want to be). last step: rotate! while going back and forth on your edge (either toe or heel) rotate the board. step 2: getting your 180s locked: once you’re able to fully turn the balance board 180°, it’s time to step it up and simulate how it works on the snow. this skill will help get your body position correct and have you landing 180s properly. don't fully stand-up fully--keep a slight bend in your knees. look over the nose of the balance board, just like you would on a snowboard. lift the nose of the board slightly in the air (as you would for an ollie). begin the 180 by twisting your hips and shoulders in the same direction as your spin. since you’re not on the snow, you’ll need to fake the landing. picture the landing and bend your knees, absorbing it, and start looking down the fall line again. step 3: time to get on the snow and give it a try: the best tip we can offer: practice, practice, practice! perform 180s on flat, over kickers, and then take it back to the living room and work on your form. rider: tyler is a long-time vew-do employee and board designer.
